| Bob Connery |
Born in Sydney in 1941, Connery
first engaged with the art of pottery when he learnt Raku pottery from Shiga Shigeo at Sturt Pottery from 1965 to 1966. In 1967 Connery built his first kiln and in 1978 he established his pottery studio in Northern New South Wales.
For the past 12 years Connery has been perfecting the art of 'reduced lustre pottery' which is an ancient technique practiced by the potters of the middle east. It involves applying gold, copper and siver salts to the glazed ceramic piece and refiring it in a special, smokey atmosphere to amalgamate the metals and the glaze.
Connery has exhibited his ceramics in Japan, where he is so highly regarded that he has been given "signing rights" by Grand Tea Master Sen Shoshitsu, effectively guaranteeing the quality of his work. Connery is one of only two westeners to have been given such an accolade. Connery has been exhibiting regularly in Australia since 1979 and has won numerours prizes, commendations and purchase awards for his work.
