| Ian Jones |
Jones began making pottery in 1974 when he studied at the Canberra TAFE College (now Canberra School of Art). Over the past thirty years his work has been driven by an exploration of the woodfire process. From 1989 to 1992, Jones lived in Japan and helped Honma Shunichi with kiln firings at his Fujisawa-yaki Studio. Jones currently works from his studio in Gundaroo, New South Wales, where he has two 'Anagama'-style kilns.
Jones' work is predominately functional in orientation, inspired by European folk potters, Japanese traditional ceramics and the Anglo-oriental Leach tradition of 20th century Britain. The woodfire process produces surfaces with complexity and a natural gradation of effect, which is not readily achievable through any other firing process.
