Moraig McKenna
Born in Scotland in 1972, McKenna completed a Bachelor of Education (Visual Arts) at Melbourne University before attaining her BA (Hons) and MA from Southern Cross University in Lismore, New South Wales. McKenna has worked as a lecturer at Southern Cross University, the Australian Catholic University and the ANU School of Art. She currently works from her studio pottery at Gundaroo, near Canberra.
McKenna's ceramics include wheel-thrown and hand-built domestic pieces made from porcelain clay and wood fired. Each piece is fired for 3 to 5 days in an Anagama-style tunnel kiln using Radiata Pine mill waste. Her work is predominantly unglazed. The unique surface qualities are derived from the firing process as the volatiles and wood ash respond to the minerals within the clay body to form colours and textures. The clay body used is a high alumina porcelain especially formulated by the artist for use in long wood firing.
