James McMurtrie completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Hot Glass at Chisholm Institute of Technology (Monash) in 1992. In 1996 he established his own studio, and in 2004 built an architecturally designed, purpose-built, studio at Pomonal in the Grampians region of Victoria, from where he now works.
Of his work, McMurtrie says: "Within my professional practice I produce two distinct areas of work. One area is a range of high quality production glassware which includes bowls, platters, vases and bottles. This work is made with function in mind, while incorporating contemporary design and colours. The second aspect of my practice is of a sculptural nature and allows me to express my creative visions on a regular basis. The Grampians area is a constant source of inspiration." McMurtrie's work can be found in private collections in Australia, Ireland and the USA.
